Home workouts are great, but some people need the motivation that going to the gym provides. Don’t let this gym anxiety be another reason that you avoid going to the gym.

Going to the gym, especially as a woman, can seem intimidating. You may feel out numbered, or that everyone is judging you. Let me tell you that most people keep to themselves at the gym. 1. Plan Your Workout

Plan out you workout before you get to them gym. This is a rule of thumb for everyone going to the gym. But if you suffer from gym anxiety, having a game plan before you get there will make you much less anxious. Have your workout planned out in the notes on your phone. My clients can use their phones to view their workouts at home or at the gym with links to video demos for each exercise!

  2. Find the Right Gym

Finding the right gym for you can help alleviate your anxiety. Not everyone gets a good workout at a big box gym. Maybe a boutique gym would help you feel more comfortable and be better suited to your needs. Check out a few places before settling on a gym. If you feel more comfotable at a smaller more expensive gym, it would be worth it for you because you will go more often vs. paying for a gym and never going.

  3. Focus On Your Breathing

Make sure to calm yourself before your workout. Take a couple minutes to find a quiet area and focus on you breathing. Calm and prepare yourself before you begin your workout. During your workout, focusin on your breathing with your exercises. This helps keep your mind off of other things that might make you nervous.

  4. Go During Non-Busy Times

Find times to go to the gym that are not peak hours. When the gym is less crowded, this can significantly decrease your anxiety and help you feel more comfortable.

  5. Find Your Jam!

Make sure to have your favorite playlist, audio book, or podcast ready to go before you get to the gym. Pop in you headphones and focus on yourself, block out everything else except for you and your work out.

  6. Start Small

Plan out shorter workouts first, then build yourself up to longer workouts in the gym. Aim to use equipment you are comfortable using and doing exercises you are comfortable doing then you can progress from there.

7. Find a partner

Find a workout partner to meet you at the gym and do some workouts together.

8. Get some help

Most gyms have personal trainers that you can hire to run you through your workout. It might be worth the cost to have a trainer go through your workout a few times so you feel more comfortable doing it on your own.
